WHEREAS, Steven C. Smith, president and chief executive officer of K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc., received the Sidney R. Rabb Award from the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) for his outstanding service to the community, the consumer, and the supermarket industry; and

WHEREAS, K-VA-T Food Stores, headquartered in Abingdon, operates 93 Food City Stores and 11 Super Dollar Discount Foods stores in the tri-state region of southwest Virginia, southeast Kentucky, and northeast Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, Steve Smith, who has had many roles at K-VA-T Food Stores, has worked in the grocery industry since he was a child; his father opened a Piggly Wiggly store in 1955 and he learned from his father throughout his youth; and

WHEREAS, the Sidney R. Rabb Award, which was presented to Steve Smith on January 30, 2012, is the FMI’s highest honor, recognizing exceptional service in all areas of the supermarket industry; and

WHEREAS, Steve Smith is active in many civic and community organizations, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Boy Scouts of America, United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, American Cancer Society, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his commitment to his industry and his community, Steve Smith also strives to improve higher education in the Commonwealth; he is a graduate of James Madison University and serves on the university’s board of visitors; and

WHEREAS, other honors received by Steve Smith include recognition as a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow and as the 2009 Grocer of the Year by the Tennessee Grocers & Convenience Store Association; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend an outstanding Virginian, Steven C. Smith, for receiving the Sidney R. Rabb Award from the Food Marketing Institute in honor of his commitment to his community, to consumers, and to the supermarket industry; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Steven C. Smith as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his many years of combining business success with corporate outreach and responsibility.
