HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 378
Commending Thomas A. Edison High School.

WHEREAS, Thomas A. Edison High School of the Fairfax County Public Schools will celebrate its 50th anniversary of providing quality education to the students of Fairfax County in 2012; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1962, Thomas A. Edison High School seeks, as noted in its mission statement, to “maximize achievement and success for all students in a climate which fosters personal responsibility, values learning, and respects cultural diversity”; and

WHEREAS, committed to academic excellence, Thomas A. Edison High School provides its diverse student body with a modified 4 x 4 schedule that allows students to take as many as eight classes during the academic year and offers the International Baccalaureate Program; and

WHEREAS, Thomas A. Edison High School also houses the Edison Academy, one of six academies in Fairfax County where junior and senior high school students can take advanced, technical, and specialized courses; and

WHEREAS, Thomas A. Edison High School offers a wide array of extracurricular activities for students that include band, debate, drama groups, forensics, JROTC, various special interest clubs, and community service clubs; and

WHEREAS, Thomas A. Edison High School students also participate in high school athletics as part of the Virginia High School League, while the entire school participates in Living Fit in Fairfax, a three-year project that seeks to improve the health and fitness literacy of students; and

WHEREAS, Thomas A. Edison High School students have received exemplary instruction from devoted teachers while supportive staff and dedicated leaders have worked diligently to create a positive learning environment for all; and

WHEREAS, as Thomas A. Edison High School celebrates its 50th anniversary, it looks forward to continuing to prepare the students of Fairfax County for academic and personal success; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Thomas A. Edison High School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Greg Croghan, principal of Thomas A. Edison High School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and gratitude for the school’s commitment to the young people of Fairfax County.
