HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 375
Commending the Volcom Give Jeans a Chance 2011 program in Virginia.

WHEREAS, by collecting more than 13,000 pairs of jeans and jackets—staples of a teenager’s wardrobe—the Volcom Give Jeans a Chance 2011 clothing drive in Virginia provided fashionable and up-to-date clothing to residents of homeless shelters in the Virginia Beach area; and

WHEREAS, the 2011 Volcom Give Jeans a Chance effort, which was held from November 1 to December 9, 2011, was sponsored and hosted by Volcom, Inc., Coastal Edge, and local Virginia Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) chapters; and

WHEREAS, in 2011 participants in the Give Jeans a Chance effort were students, teachers, and families in the Mid-Atlantic area; students in Northern Virginia donated more than 5,000 jeans and jackets, and 2,000 pieces of clothing came from students on the Outer Banks of North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Give Jeans a Chance 2011 is an international effort of the Volcom, Inc., clothing company; locally, Coastal Edge stores had a major leadership role, but ultimately it was the enthusiasm of the students, many of whom are involved in their schools’ Virginia DECA chapters, that ensured the program’s success; and

WHEREAS, the goal of the Give Jeans a Chance event was to collect 1,000 pairs of jeans and/or jackets per DECA chapter; the goal was far exceeded with more than 13,000 jeans and jackets being donated; and

WHEREAS, when students delivered the clothing to local homeless shelters, the jeans and jackets were especially appreciated by the residents and it was a gratifying experience for many of the participants; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Volcom Give Jeans a Chance 2011 program in Virginia for its highly successful school-based jeans donation program; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Volcom Give Jeans a Chance 2011 program in Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for its work with the homeless.
