12105032DWHEREAS, Milton Conway Mitter of Norfolk, who faithfully served his country and community in many capacities throughout his life, died on December 6, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a native of Norfolk, Conway Mitter graduated from the Norfolk Public Schools system and attended Lincoln University; and
WHEREAS, as the nation became embroiled in World War II, Conway Mitter joined the thousands of other young men of his generation in the war effort as a member of the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, captured by the Nazis, Conway Mitter became a prisoner of war as many of his comrades perished; he endured torture and extreme hardship until his release; and
WHEREAS, the recipient of a Prisoner of War Medal for his distinguished service to his country, Conway Mitter was honorably discharged as a United States Army sergeant; and
WHEREAS, Conway Mitter returned to Norfolk and established himself as a trusted employee of the United States Postal Service, enjoying a 37-year career that was marked by numerous commendations for his faithful service and exemplary performance; and
WHEREAS, an admired civic leader, Conway Mitter was a member of the Hiawatha Beneficial and Social Association, Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, What’s Social & Civic Club, and Broad Creek Shores Civic League; and
WHEREAS, a member of First Baptist Church, Conway Mitter participated in the Men’s Progressive League and other church ministries and served as director of Shepherd’s Village assisted living facility, where he took great efforts to ensure quality care to residents; and
WHEREAS, a popular figure on Anna Street, Conway Mitter was known for his friendly manner and as an outstanding role model for young people; and
WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Conway Mitter served as an inspiration to others as he faithfully served his community, church, and country; and
WHEREAS, devoted to his family, Conway Mitter leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 62 years, Ann; daughter, Deborah, and her family, including beloved grandson, Wayland; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a distinguished veteran and outstanding citizen of the Commonwealth, Milton Conway Mitter; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Milton Conway Mitter as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
