WHEREAS, in 1932 the General Assembly gave Virginia motor vehicle inspectors the authority to enforce the criminal code of the Commonwealth in addition to the motor vehicle code; and
WHEREAS, these inspectors were later identified as State Troopers and became the Virginia Department of State Police; and
WHEREAS, in 1932 the General Assembly established a system of motor vehicle safety inspections that became a model for the nation; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia State Police is a nationally accredited organization that continues to expertly enforce the motor vehicle laws of the Commonwealth and combat and investigate all aspects of crime in every part of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the proud men and women of the Virginia State Police risk their lives daily in the performance of their duties to serve and protect all those living in, working in, and traveling through the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia State Police is a vital resource in the protection of the Commonwealth in times of natural and manmade disasters and crises; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Virginia State Police and its sworn and civilian personnel on its 80th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Colonel W.S. Flaherty, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police, as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the vital organization’s fine service to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
