Celebrating the life of Carolyn L. Kauffman.

WHEREAS, Carolyn L. Kauffman of Fairfax, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, died on December 17, 2011; she was an attorney and civil servant who loved animals and was an accomplished artist and author; and

WHEREAS, from her youth, Carolyn Kauffman loved horses, and throughout her life the cause of animal rights was dear to her; while living in California, she worked with local companies to protect area wildlife; and

WHEREAS, Carolyn Kauffman’s advocacy included commitment to and generous support of animal rights organizations and groups that worked with the homeless, Native Americans, and veterans, as well as local and state officials of the Democratic Party; and

WHEREAS, before settling in Fairfax City, Carolyn Kauffman and her family traveled across the United States and Europe; during this time of exploration and adventure, she became an artist and a writer; and

WHEREAS, at a time when few women studied law, Carolyn Kauffman earned a law degree by correspondence; as a civil servant at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina in the 1950s, she worked for the base’s Criminal Investigation Bureau; and

WHEREAS, Carolyn Kauffman and her husband, Thomas, celebrated 60 years of marriage on September 1, 2011; Thomas and the couple’s son, Dana, and many other family members and friends are left to lovingly cherish the memory of an unselfish, talented, and enterprising woman; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a loving wife and mother who worked to make the world a kinder and better place, Carolyn L. Kauffman; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carolyn L. Kauffman as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
