2012 SESSION
12105021DWHEREAS, Patrick Hammes, while an outstanding seventh grader at Herndon Middle School, won the Virginia Geographic Bee on April 1, 2011; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Geographic Bee, part of the National Geographic Society’s National Geographic Bee competition, encourages the teaching and study of geography; and
WHEREAS, one hundred students in grades four through eight from across the Commonwealth traveled to Shenandoah University in Winchester to participate in the 2011 Virginia Geographic Bee; and
WHEREAS, prior to the competition, Patrick Hammes studied diligently and saw the results of his labors as he became one of 10 students to advance to the final round of competition in the Virginia Geographic Bee; and
WHEREAS, before an audience of family members and fellow competitors, Patrick Hammes answered several difficult questions and, after correctly identifying Japan as the second largest economy in Asia, won the Virginia Geographic Bee; and
WHEREAS, Patrick Hammes represented the Commonwealth at the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 24, 2011, as one of 54 champions from among the over 4,000,000 original entrants in grades four through eight from participating schools across the nation; and
WHEREAS, Patrick Hammes finished highest of any participant from the Mid-Atlantic states at the National Geographic Bee, a testament to his hard work and extensive knowledge; and
WHEREAS, Patrick Hammes, now an eighth grade student at Herndon Middle School, takes the maximum number of honors classes offered and participates in the Technology Student Association; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Patrick Hammes on winning the Virginia Geographic Bee and on his extraordinary performance at the National Geographic Bee; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Patrick Hammes as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes in his future endeavors.
