Commending Doug Marrs.

WHEREAS, Doug Marrs, who faithfully served his fellow residents for eight years as the District B representative on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, retired in 2011; and

WHEREAS, Doug Marrs grew up in the coalfields of West Virginia, leaving to serve his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the 173rd Airborne Brigade during the Vietnam War; and

WHEREAS, after his distinguished military service, Doug Marrs settled in Virginia and pursued a career in law enforcement, working for the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and Town of Blacksburg Police Department and spending 24 years with the Christiansburg Police Department before being elected sheriff of Montgomery County in 1996, a position he held for eight years; and

WHEREAS, a respected figure in the community, Doug Marrs then ran for and won election as the District B representative on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, serving as vice-chair in 2008; and

WHEREAS, committed to the well-being and prosperity of the residents of Montgomery County, Doug Marrs worked alongside fellow supervisors, county employees, and area officials to ensure the efficient and effective operation of local government; and

WHEREAS, Doug Marrs ably represented Montgomery County on a number of boards and commissions, including the Metropolitan Planning Organization, local chamber of commerce, Human Services Commission’s Executive Committee, public service authority, roads committee, and road viewers board; and

WHEREAS, Doug Marrs also served on the Virginia Association of Counties Finance and Transportation Steering Committees; and

WHEREAS, a trusted law-enforcement professional, Doug Marrs provided valuable insight and counsel as he worked with Franklin County, Roanoke County, the City of Salem, and state officials to create the Western Virginia Regional Jail Authority; and

WHEREAS, during Doug Marrs’ tenure on the board of supervisors, several new educational facilities were created or renovated to better serve local students, including Prices Fork Elementary School, Eastern Montgomery Elementary School, Blacksburg High School, Auburn High School, and Auburn Middle School; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the Fairview District Home board, Doug Marrs worked to ensure that senior citizens in the community had a safe and comfortable facility in which to reside; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated public servant, Doug Marrs devoted countless hours over the past eight years as he attended meetings, researched issues, and responded to constituent concerns, all with the goal of enhancing Montgomery County’s proud reputation of being a great place in which to live and work; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Doug Marrs for his distinguished service to the residents of Montgomery County as an eight-year member of the board of supervisors; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doug Marrs as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and respect for his commitment to public service.
