Commending the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club.

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club will proudly celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2012; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club, part of the International Association of Lions Clubs, was chartered on March 12, 1982, with 33 members; Stanley Reader served as the Club’s first president; and

WHEREAS, for three decades, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club has provided outstanding service to Smith Mountain Lake and the Counties of Bedford and Franklin; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club actively takes part in the International Association of Lions Clubs’ sight preservation and restoration efforts, providing financial assistance for eye exams and eyeglasses, conducting vision screenings, collecting used eyeglasses for recycling, and generously contributing to the Lions Clubs International Foundation; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club also participates in hearing preservation and restoration efforts by financially supporting the reconditioning of hearing aids, conducting hearing testing, and contributing to the Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation and Research Center at the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, when local communities experienced an increase in the number of residents with diabetes, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club became involved, providing scholarships to a local camp for children with the disease and donating funds to the Free Clinic of Franklin County for free diabetic testing materials for individuals in need; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club was nominated for a Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award for its contributions to the relocation and restoration of the historic Hales Ford Academy school building; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club has also sponsored local music contests, partnered with AARP to provide tax assistance to elderly taxpayers, and provided boat cruises on Smith Mountain Lake to multiple sclerosis patients and their families; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club raises funds for its many community service projects through a popular golf tournament, reverse raffle, bridge tournament, and plant sales; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club has been committed to the well-being of the greater Smith Mountain Lake community and its citizens for 30 years and is an exemplary model for service organizations across the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for its outstanding service and best wishes for continued success in the future.
