WHEREAS, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic, headquartered in Arlington County, celebrates in 2012 its 50th anniversary of helping individuals overcome substance abuse problems; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1962 in an Arlington church basement, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic, originally known as Alcoholic Rehabilitation, Inc., later became known as Vanguard Services Unlimited, and in 2010, became affiliated with the Phoenix House Foundation and adopted its current name; and
WHEREAS, over the past five decades, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic has served more than 30,000 men, women, and adolescents from Virginia and neighboring states while also providing drug and alcohol education through its substance abuse prevention and treatment programs; and
WHEREAS, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic offers a variety of residential, transitional, and outpatient programs, including the Phoenix Program, Demeter House, Re-Entry, the Girls and Boys Recovery Lodges, Nuevo Dia, Independence House, the Phoenix House Counseling Center, and Second Chance; and
WHEREAS, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic has enjoyed the support of committed volunteers, wise board members, and dedicated professional staff as it has helped individuals live enriching, productive lives free of substance abuse; and
WHEREAS, for 50 years, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic has offered hope, help, and healing to individuals struggling with substance abuse and their families and looks forward to continuing to fulfill its mission in the future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the organization’s commitment to helping people overcome substance abuse.
