12103321DWHEREAS, Jon Fried of Crozet, one of nine Virginia athletes who competed at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, captured a silver medal in men’s singles tennis and a bronze medal in mixed doubles tennis at the international competition; and
WHEREAS, over 7,500 athletes traveled to the historic city of Athens, Greece, to participate in the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games held June 25 - July 4, 2011; and
WHEREAS, one of the top Special Olympics tennis players in the world, Jon Fried captured gold at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, with the motto of “play like a tiger, not a chicken”; and
WHEREAS, a remarkable athlete, Jon Fried began playing tennis at the age of 10 and now, 40 years later, continues to train with an intensity and drive that inspires and amazes those around him; and
WHEREAS, Jon Fried has participated in Special Olympics for decades, traveling across the nation and to foreign countries to compete, meeting fellow athletes from around the world, and encouraging good sportsmanship; and
WHEREAS, the 1994 Special Olympics Virginia Athlete of the Year, Jon Fried also enjoys bowling and playing soccer and basketball; and
WHEREAS, at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, Jon Fried once again demonstrated his tennis prowess, fiercely competing against the best Special Olympics athletes to capture a silver medal in men’s singles tennis and a bronze medal in mixed doubles tennis; and
WHEREAS, a talented tennis player and inspiring role model, Jon Fried proudly represented Crozet, the Commonwealth, and the nation at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Jon Fried on his outstanding Special Olympics tennis career and his exemplary performance in Athens, Greece, at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jon Fried as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his dedication to the Special Olympics, his fellow athletes, and the sport of tennis.
