12104786DWHEREAS, Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700, one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the nation and the first established in the Commonwealth, will celebrate 100 years of Scouting in 2012; and
WHEREAS, Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 began after Dr. Frank L. Day, a professor at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, visited England and learned about the Scouting program; and
WHEREAS, founded on October 3, 1912, with Randolph-Macon student Campbell Spann as Scoutmaster, Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 received its national charter on January 13, 1913, almost four years before the Boy Scouts of America received its Congressional charter; and
WHEREAS, Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 began as Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 1, became Troop No. 108 in 1926, Troop No. 601 in 1953, and Troop No. 700 in 1970; and
WHEREAS, Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 members contributed to the United States war effort during World War I, selling war bonds door-to-door, and have continued to provide service to the community for the past 100 years; and
WHEREAS, today, members of Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 participate in a wide array of activities designed to build character, personal fitness, and good citizenship skills; and
WHEREAS, members of Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 have gone on to achieve success in a variety of industries while remaining true to the principles instilled in them by the examples of their leaders; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ashland Boy Scout Troop No. 700 as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the Troop’s commitment to serving the local community and developing young men of integrity.
