Commending Helen Burnett Shields.

WHEREAS, Helen Burnett Shields of the Southside Virginia community of Spring Garden is recognized as a respected and active citizen of the Commonwealth on the occasion of her 100th birthday, January 22, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Helen Shields, who grew up on a farm and married a tobacco farmer, cooks her own hearty breakfast each day; gravy, her favorite food, features prominently in her morning meal; and

WHEREAS, throughout her long and productive life, Helen Shields has stayed engaged in the world around her, as she loves to garden and is proud of her neat and orderly house; she gets great pleasure from visits and telephone conversations with friends and family members; and

WHEREAS, other hobbies that Helen Shields enjoys are word search puzzles and sports; she is an ardent fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Duke University basketball team; and

WHEREAS, dancing became a favorite pastime for Helen Shields after she recovered from the death of her husband, W.T. Shields, who passed away in 1969; it was an activity she enjoyed for almost two decades; and

WHEREAS, Helen Shields has loved to fish, so much so that at age 75, when she broke her wrist, she continued her angling hobby with her arm in a cast; and

WHEREAS, Helen Shields’ life has revolved around faith, family, and community, as she has regularly attended Chestnut Level Baptist Church; her daughter, Fay, visits almost daily, and she enjoys time with her daughter-in-law, Wanda, whose husband, Comar—Helen’s son—died several years ago; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Helen Burnett Shields on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Helen Burnett Shields as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes and congratulations.
