WHEREAS, Stephen J. DeBenedittis, the mayor of the Town of Herndon, will retire in 2012 after six years of exemplary service to the town’s residents; and

WHEREAS, a longtime resident of Herndon, Steve DeBenedittis attended Herndon Elementary, Middle, and High Schools and returned to his hometown after earning a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, committed to the well-being of the Town of Herndon, Steve DeBenedittis took an active role in community affairs, sharing his thoughts before the town council and planning commission over the years and participating in his neighborhood association; and

WHEREAS, in 2006 Steve DeBenedittis won the confidence of voters, who elected him mayor of the Town of Herndon and reelected him in 2008 and 2010; and

WHEREAS, Steve DeBenedittis worked alongside town council members, town employees, and area officials to ensure the efficient, effective, and fiscally sound operation of local government for town residents; and

WHEREAS, a coalition builder, Steve DeBenedittis formed and chaired the Town Association of Northern Virginia and also chaired a coalition on illegal aliens, which brought together local leaders in meaningful discussion; and

WHEREAS, Steve DeBenedittis ably represented the Town of Herndon on the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, a Northern Virginia Transportation Authority commission, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, and the Herndon-Dulles Visitor’s Center board of directors; and

WHEREAS, in 2010 the Herndon Masonic Lodge honored Steve DeBenedittis for his community service efforts with a Community Builder Award; and

WHEREAS, Steve DeBenedittis has faithfully served his fellow residents as mayor of the Town of Herndon for six years; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Stephen J. DeBenedittis for his exemplary service as mayor of the Town of Herndon; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stephen J. DeBenedittis as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his commitment to public service.
