HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 283
Celebrating the life of W. Todd Benson.

WHEREAS, W. Todd Benson, a distinguished attorney and passionate conservationist from the small community of Huntley in Rappahannock County, died on August 30, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Princeton University, Todd Benson earned a Juris Doctorate from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond before embarking on an exemplary legal career; and

WHEREAS, as the municipal attorney for Henrico and Rockbridge Counties and the Town of Front Royal and the assistant zoning administrator for Fauquier County, Todd Benson provided wise counsel and insight to assist the localities in serving their residents; and

WHEREAS, devoted to preserving and protecting the Northern Piedmont’s open spaces and great natural resources, Todd Benson served as the Fauquier County field officer and land use attorney at the Piedmont Environmental Council; and

WHEREAS, Todd Benson served as chair and vice-chair of the Environmental Law Section of the Virginia State Bar and worked to advance the knowledge and importance of environmental law among his colleagues; and

WHEREAS, a brilliant attorney, Todd Benson taught law to a rising generation as an adjunct professor at Lord Fairfax Community College, Virginia Commonwealth University, and T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Todd Benson took an active role in community affairs as a member of the Fauquier County Business Advisory Committee and established the Fauquier County Sesquicentennial Committee to help commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, Todd Benson shared his enthusiasm and love for the outdoors with family, friends, and students and leaves behind a legacy of service focused on preserving and protecting the great natural beauties of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Todd Benson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Tami; children, Edward and Alex, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, W. Todd Benson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of W. Todd Benson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
