Celebrating the life of Nick Prillaman, Jr.

WHEREAS, Nick Prillaman, Jr., of Martinsville, a successful business executive and dedicated community supporter, died on April 30, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Bassett High School, Nick Prillaman proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy onboard the USS Frank Knox, and continued his military service after the war as a member of the United States Naval Reserve; and

WHEREAS, in 1949 Nick Prillaman earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech and joined the family business started by his father, The Prillaman Company, eventually becoming president; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking executive, Nick Prillaman teamed with his brother, Hal, to build the Prillaman Chemical Corp. and The Prillaman Brothers, Inc.; they also acquired several other related companies over the years; and

WHEREAS, Nick Prillaman took an active role in church and community affairs, serving in various capacities at First United Methodist Church, participating in the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry and the Blue Ridge Regional Library Literacy Program, and leading the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship as president; and

WHEREAS, Nick Prillaman and his wife, Nancy, generously supported the chemistry program at Patrick Henry Community College, establishing the Nancy Long and Nick Prillaman, Jr., Classroom and Laboratory; and

WHEREAS, a loyal Hokie, Nick Prillaman was a life member of the College of Engineering’s Alumni Committee of 100, a charter member and benefactor of the Ut Prosim Society, and sponsor of the Nick Prillaman Professorship in Civil and Environmental Engineering; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Nick Prillaman will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Nancy; two children, Hunter and Stephanie, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of the Commonwealth, Nick Prillaman, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nick Prillaman, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
