HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 252
Celebrating the life of Addie Beatrice Weaver Christian.

WHEREAS, Addie Beatrice Weaver Christian of Norfolk, an extraordinarily compassionate woman who served her family and community with great heart, died on August 23, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Winton, North Carolina, Beatrice Christian graduated from what is now known as Calvin Scott Brown School and attended Shaw University, where she met the love of her life, John Christian; and

WHEREAS, following his graduation, the couple married and briefly relocated to Fairmont, North Carolina, before finally settling in Norfolk, where they put down strong roots in the community and raised their family; and

WHEREAS, a devoted wife, Beatrice Christian supported her husband in his endeavors as an educator, coach, and principal in the Norfolk Public School system, attending every home game that he coached for 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Beatrice Christian took great pride in her children and opened her heart and home to numerous other young people throughout her life, serving as a den mother for the Cub Scouts and a charter member of the Norfolk chapter of Jack and Jill of America; and

WHEREAS, in addition to raising her family, Beatrice Christian worked as a valued employee at the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority; Norfolk Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space; New Journal and Guide; and what is now Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, Beatrice Christian took an active role in community affairs through her membership at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, enjoyed her affiliation with the Faculty Women’s Club and The Tu Jours, and supported the Crispus Attucks Children’s Center; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her beloved husband, John, Beatrice Christian will be fondly remembered for her giving spirit and greatly missed by her children, Althea and John, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and individuals whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of Norfolk, Addie Beatrice Weaver Christian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Addie Beatrice Weaver Christian as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
