Celebrating the life of the Honorable Leslie Longstreet Mason, Jr.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 13, 2012
Agreed to by the Senate, January 19, 2012

WHEREAS, the very fabric of Virginian society depends upon the faithful upholding of the Constitution of Virginia, the Constitution of the United States, and also the laws of the Commonwealth by the judges of our various Courts; and

WHEREAS, the faithful application of justice requires the achievement and exercise of the singular virtues that are a cherished benefice of our tradition of liberty under law; and

WHEREAS, Judge Leslie Longstreet Mason, Jr., embodied these virtues as Judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court for the 11th  Circuit of Virginia consisting of Powhatan, Amelia, Nottoway, and Dinwiddie Counties, and also the City of Petersburg; and

WHEREAS, Judge Mason’s embodiment of the Virginian virtues and his exemplary service to the people of the Southside counties comprising the 11th Circuit were all the more remarkable because he was born beyond the bounds of the Commonwealth and attended Purdue University in Indiana—though subsequently he came to Virginia to earn the Juris Doctor degree from the venerable Law School of Washington & Lee University; and

WHEREAS, Judge Leslie Mason made Powhatan his family home in 1956, was a longtime member and trustee of Providence Presbyterian Church, was a devoted member of The Fine Creek Club, and was a founder of Central Virginia Bank; and

WHEREAS, Judge Leslie Mason, who retired from the bench in 1994, after twenty years’ service—though he was pleased to serve throughout the Commonwealth as a Substitute Judge—came to be a beloved elder statesman within the community of Powhatan; and

WHEREAS, Judge Leslie Mason passed to the next life on September 9, 2011, at the age of 84, and is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Chiles Mason, and also by the couple’s son, three daughters, seven grandchildren, and a host of far-flung kin; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the memory of this good man, the Honorable Leslie Longstreet Mason, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Helen Chiles Mason as a fitting tribute to her late husband, Judge Leslie Longstreet Mason, Jr., a Virginian jurist, faithful custodian of the law, and honorable executor of justice.
