Commending Elizabeth Coakley.

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Coakley of Abingdon, a junior at Abingdon High School, was crowned Miss Virginia Teen USA 2012; and

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Coakley’s talents extend far beyond beauty pageant competition as she is the starting second base player for the school’s softball team, which advanced to the state quarterfinals in her sophomore year; and

WHEREAS, while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in school, Elizabeth Coakley serves as president of the Future Business Leaders of America club; she also is the Junior Class Secretary, and she raised $12,000 for the American Heart Association through the Queen of Hearts program; and

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Coakley has received academic honors, including  the Geometry Award, the Information Technology Award, and the Daughters of the American Revolution Writing Award; she also is a staff writer for The Beacon, the Abingdon High School yearbook; and

WHEREAS, after finishing third in a field of three contestants in her first pageant, entered during her freshman year, Elizabeth Coakley was determined to become a statewide contest winner, and to that end, she entered 15 pageants on her way to claiming the crown at the Miss Virginia Teen USA competition; and

WHEREAS, during her reign, Elizabeth Coakley will promote the work of three organizations: Best Buddies, which helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; Girls Inc., which encourages girls to achieve their best; and Polar Plunge, a fund-raising project of Special Olympics Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Coakley, who won a scholarship to Emory & Henry College as part of the Miss Virginia Teen USA 2012 contest, plans to be a broadcast journalist once she completes her education; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Elizabeth Coakley on being crowned Miss Virginia Teen USA 2012; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Elizabeth Coakley as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations for her many accomplishments and best wishes for success in the future.
