HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 221
Commending J. Samuel Burton.

WHEREAS, as a steady, unwavering, and focused advocate for public education, J. Samuel Burton admirably served on the Pittsylvania County School Board for 21 years, representing the Chatham-Blairs District; and

WHEREAS, Samuel Burton recognized that students, staff, and constituents all deserved a voice as the school board worked to provide a sound education for the students of Pittsylvania County, and his thoughtful and supportive contributions to public education extended far beyond his district; and

WHEREAS, in devoting two decades to ensuring that Pittsylvania County public school students received a quality education, Samuel Burton remained cognizant of the county’s diverse student population and its challenges, and he was determined to empower each student; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure, Samuel Burton was involved in building two new elementary schools, four new middle schools, and renovating four high schools in Pittsylvania County, and in the process creating vibrant and stimulating learning environments for students in all grades; and

WHEREAS, Samuel Burton’s contributions to public education in Pittsylvania County included serving as vice-chair of the school board for four years and chair for seven years; in his work he followed the values set by his parents to “Do the Right Thing”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend a dedicated public servant and champion of public education in Pittsylvania County, J. Samuel Burton; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to J. Samuel Burton as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his many years of service to the young people of Pittsylvania County.
