2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, Warren Calvin Falwell, a noted businessman who brought baseball to Lynchburg when he formed the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation, died on August 20, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a successful entrepreneur, Calvin Falwell partnered with his brother, Lawrence, to open several businesses in the Lynchburg area, including the Falwell Well Corporation and Truck Body Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Calvin Falwell also started Falwell Airport, which grew to become Falwell Aviation, and played an instrumental role in the development of an airport authority as the transportation needs of the area grew; and
WHEREAS, in 1986 Calvin Falwell was inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame for his decades of distinguished service to the aviation industry in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, a savvy business leader, Calvin Falwell built his businesses into prosperous enterprises that provided vital services to local residents and an important boost for the area economy; and
WHEREAS, an avid baseball fan, Calvin Falwell knew that area residents shared his love of the game; he helped create the Lynchburg Little League and formed the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation in the 1960s to bring Minor League Baseball to Lynchburg; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Class A minor league teams affiliated with the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Atlanta Braves came to Lynchburg to play in the Carolina League to the delight of local baseball enthusiasts; and
WHEREAS, Calvin Falwell generously gave of his time and talents to numerous other community organizations over the course of his life to help his fellow residents and make the Lynchburg area a great place in which to live, work, and visit; and
WHEREAS, Calvin Falwell was particularly touched when the City Stadium was renovated and the field renamed in his honor and when the 2005 Minor League Baseball Winter Meeting named him its “King of Baseball” in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the game; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Calvin Falwell will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 69 years, Doris; sons, Charles, Terry, and David, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Warren Calvin Falwell; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Warren Calvin Falwell as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
