2012 SESSION
12103137DWHEREAS, the Clintwood High School football team traveled from Dickenson County to capture the Virginia High School League Group A Division 1 state championship title at Salem City Stadium on December 10, 2011; and
WHEREAS, after capturing the Lonesome Pine District championship, the Clintwood High School football team advanced to regional and state play, facing a potentially devastating loss when starting quarterback Dylan Dahley broke his collarbone in the state quarterfinals; and
WHEREAS, determined team members rallied around sophomore Dalton Dahley as he stepped into the quarterback’s shoes and led the team to the state championship matchup against favored Galax High School in only the second start of his varsity career; and
WHEREAS, the Galax High School Maroon Tide took an early 14 - 0 lead, but the Clintwood High School Greenwave came back, scoring three touchdowns by halftime and two more in the second half, including a 76-yard run to the end zone by Robbie Mullins; and
WHEREAS, the Galax High School football team was not done, however, scoring two more touchdowns, one with under two minutes left in the game; in the final seconds, Clintwood High School fans cheered wildly as the Greenwave defense forced an incomplete pass in the end zone to finish the game 33 - 28; and
WHEREAS, several players garnered Lonesome Pine District honors: Gavan Meade was named the offensive player of the year while Austin Dotson was the defensive player of the year and Head Coach Rick Mullins was named the Tom Turner Division 1 Coach of the Year; and
WHEREAS, the entire team, which included the first female in Clintwood football history to be on a state championship winning team, worked hard throughout the season and received the enormous support of family, school, and community members; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Clintwood High School football team on winning the Virginia High School League Group A Division 1 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Rick Mullins, the head coach of the Clintwood High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s spectacular season.
