Commending Deventae Mooney.

WHEREAS, Deventae Mooney, a junior at Eastside High School in Coeburn, was one of 10 students chosen from 1,200 nominations across the United States and Canada as a Huggable Hero by Build-A-Bear Workshop; and

WHEREAS, the Huggable Heroes Program annually recognizes 10 young leaders from the United States and Canada who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities; and

WHEREAS, Deventae Mooney began volunteering as an elementary school student, reaching out to tutor fellow students who needed assistance with their studies and then lending a helping hand wherever he saw a need; and

WHEREAS, Deventae Mooney serves as a role model for younger children as he coaches Little League, peanut football, and other youth sports, encouraging hard work, practice, teamwork, and good sportsmanship; and

WHEREAS, an aspiring teacher, Deventae Mooney continues to tutor summer school students and, during the school year, volunteers at Coeburn Primary School before going to school himself; and

WHEREAS, a natural leader, Deventae Mooney sees a need in the community and becomes involved, encouraging those around him to help out as well, as evidenced by his successful efforts to raise thousands of dollars for organizations that support cancer patients and youth sports; and

WHEREAS, Deventae Mooney participates in youth activities at his church, including the drama team and Bible school; as part of the church’s brown bag lunch program, he has delivered 24,000 brown bag lunches during the summers to local children in need; and

WHEREAS, Deventae Mooney traveled to Build-A-Bear Workshop headquarters in St. Louis to accept the $10,000 award, part of which, in keeping with his generous spirit, he plans to donate to a local charity; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate, hardworking, and remarkable young man, Deventae Mooney has been a true hometown Huggable Hero for his community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend a singular young Virginian, Deventae Mooney, on his selection as a Huggable Hero by Build-A-Bear Workshop; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Deventae Mooney as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for his contributions to his community.
