2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians is the largest medical specialty society in the Commonwealth and represents more than 2,800 members, including practicing family physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians’ 1,900 practicing family physician members are dedicated to the dignity and well-being of all Virginians by providing quality, comprehensive, continuing, and accessible health care; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s family physicians emphasize the importance of providing preventative, wellness, and primary care necessary to restrain ever-increasing health care costs; and
WHEREAS, Virginia faces an acute need for primary care providers, especially in medically underserved areas; and
WHEREAS, the National Committee for Quality Assurance has recognized family medicine practices across the Commonwealth at the highest levels of Patient-Centered Medical Home certification due to the leadership of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians encourage medical students to make a commitment to provide primary care medical services in medically underserved areas and have been instrumental in the Commonwealth’s retention of the majority of its family medicine resident physicians; and
WHEREAS, the members and staff of the General Assembly receive medical care through the operation of the “Family Physician of the Day” program provided by competent and experienced family physician volunteers from the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians; and
WHEREAS, the security of having a family physician within steps of the Capitol is of inestimable value to the members of the General Assembly; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians on its services to the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kent Willyard, M.D., President of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the vital role played by family physicians in Virginia’s health care system.
