HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 163
Commending the Centreville High School football team.

WHEREAS, the Centreville High School football team won the 2011 Northern Region Division 6 Group AAA Virginia High School League championship, defeating Westfield High School, 27 - 24; and

WHEREAS, the Centreville High School football team’s 2011 winning streak continued when they triumphed over Hermitage High School in a state semi-final matchup, which propelled the team to the state championship game; and

WHEREAS, the Wildcats, with a 13 - 2 record for the year, often played before crowds of thousands as excitement built throughout the fall; in their Northern Region triumph over Westfield High School, the stadium was filled with an estimated 10,000 football fans; and

WHEREAS, the Centreville High School Wildcats’ victory over Westfield High School was the team’s first win over its regional foe since 2001; the win was sealed when Westfield’s field goal attempt, which would have tied the game, was blocked with less than two minutes to play; and

WHEREAS, the Centreville High School Wildcats’ winning score in the state semi-final game against Hermitage High School was a nail-biting 10 - 9; it was the Wildcats’ first trip to the semi-final match-up since 2000, the year the team won the state title; and

WHEREAS, many factors contributed to the team’s success in 2011, including the hard work and dedication of the entire team, the commitment of Head Coach Chris Haddock and his staff, and the support of the entire Centreville High School community; and

WHEREAS, numerous members of the talented Centreville High School football team won all-district and all-region honors for 2011, and Centreville defensive end Ken Ekanem was named Concorde District Defensive Player of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the Centreville High School football program pioneered the use of a mobile Web application that provides detailed information about the team, and the school used mass text messaging during the football season as a type of social media pep rally to build excitement for upcoming games; and

WHEREAS, support for the Centreville High School team grew as the team’s successes mounted throughout the 2011 season—so much so that six busloads of students accompanied a caravan of fans to the championship game in Charlottesville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Centreville High School football team for being the 2011 Virginia High School League Group AAA Northern Region Division 6 champion; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Chris Haddock, head coach of the Centreville High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and congratulations for an outstanding season.
