HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 15
Celebrating the life of A.B. Harrelson, M.D.

WHEREAS, A.B. Harrelson of Richmond, who served his patients and profession with great dedication and took an active role in community affairs, died on November 7, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, A.B. Harrelson received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) and pursued postgraduate study in internal medicine and neurology; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Harrelson taught neurology at the Medical College of Virginia, interrupting his studies to serve his country at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, before returning to Richmond to continue teaching at MCV and the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center; and

WHEREAS, in 1969 Dr. Harrelson entered the private practice of neurology, devoting innumerable hours to ensure the best possible care for his patients while staying abreast of the latest developments in his field; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Harrelson strongly believed that a professional organization dedicated to the specific practice of neurology would be of benefit to neurologists across the Commonwealth; he founded the Virginia Neurological Society in 1972 and served as its president; and

WHEREAS, respected by his colleagues for his considerable knowledge and expertise, Dr. Harrelson served as president and chair of the board of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, later working with the Academy and the Medical Society of Virginia to advocate for physician concerns; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Harrelson was a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, devoted considerable time as chief of St. Mary’s Hospital medical staff, and served as a board member of St. Mary’s Hospital and the Bon Secours Richmond Health System; and

WHEREAS, despite a busy professional schedule, Dr. Harrelson generously shared his time and talents with numerous community organizations, including the Adult Development Center and Grace House, and received many accolades for his unselfish service; and

WHEREAS, compassionate and skilled, Dr. Harrelson touched the lives of countless individuals over the course of his distinguished medical career; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Dr. Harrelson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 49 years, Peggy; sons, Peter, Michael, Austin, and John, and their families; other family members and friends; and former patients; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated physician and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, A.B. Harrelson, M.D.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of A.B. Harrelson, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
