WHEREAS, over 912,790 people in the Commonwealth do not know from where their next meal will come according to the Federation of Virginia Food Banks; and
WHEREAS, the most recent “Hunger in America 2010” study by Feeding America shows that the Commonwealth’s food banks serve 42 percent children, six percent elderly, 45 percent households with at least one employed adult, and six percent homeless; and
WHEREAS, the nation’s current economic crisis has exacerbated the problem of food insecurity, when individuals do not have the ability to acquire nutritionally adequate and safe foods in socially acceptable ways; and
WHEREAS, many individuals and families are forced to choose between providing food or paying their rent or mortgage, paying for transportation, or paying for medical bills; and
WHEREAS, those that struggle with food insecurity may include family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers; and
WHEREAS, the designation of April 14 as Hold Out for Hunger Day in Virginia will provide Virginians the opportunity to skip one meal and donate the cost of the meal in an effort to prevent hunger; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate April 14, in 2012 and in each succeeding year, as Hold Out for Hunger Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this day on the General Assembly’s website.
