WHEREAS, in 1987 Congress established the month of March as "Women's History Month" to acknowledge the important role and contributions of women in the formation of America; and
WHEREAS, women represent 51 percent of the nation's population; however, the achievements and contributions of women are underrepresented in museums and memorials, many of which are devoted to honoring flight, postage stamps, buildings, historic personalities, and issues of national interest; and
WHEREAS, women constituted only 10 percent of the persons identified in a recent survey of 18 history textbooks; and
WHEREAS in 1999, the President's Commission on the Celebration of Women in American History recommended the creation of a women's history museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum, a nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational institution founded in 1996 and dedicated to preserving, interpreting, celebrating, and integrating the diverse historic contributions and heritage of women fully into the nation's history, is seeking a location on the National Mall in close proximity to the White House and the United States Capitol; and
WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum has identified federally owned property for sale near the National Mall and legislation is currently pending in Congress which would authorize the museum to purchase the property at fair market value with privately raised funds, and no federal funds would be requested or used to purchase the land; and
WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum will showcase the complete history and contributions of women in the United States in the marketplace, arts and sciences, government, entertainment, education, on the home front, and in the community; and
WHEREAS, a Coalition of 43 women's organizations representing eight million women, which includes the National Foundation for Women Legislators, support the efforts of the National Women's History Museum to establish a permanent and prominent location on or near the National Mall in the nation's capital; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the location of a National Women's History Museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., be supported; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the members of the Virginia Congressional Delegation, requesting that they support the location of a National Women's History Museum on the National Mall in Washington D.C., so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
