12103581DBe it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. That the Department of Health shall convene a work group, which shall include but not be limited to, representatives of the Department of Health, the Department of Health Professions, the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, the University of Virginia Health System, the Eastern Virginia Medical School, the American Heart Association, the Children's National Medical Center, the March of Dimes Virginia Chapter, the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, and the Medical Society of Virginia to develop a plan for implementation of a program for screening infants for critical congenital cyanotic heart disease using transcutaneous oxygen monitoring and providing appropriate early intervention services to infants identified as having critical congenital cyanotic heart disease to reduce rates of death or disability among such children. The plan shall include: provisions for implementing the screening program in all hospitals providing maternity services statewide; a process for referring infants identified as having critical congenital cyanotic heart disease to appropriate health care services; provisions for public education regarding the symptoms of critical congenital cyanotic heart disease and options for diagnosis and treatment of critical congenital cyanotic heart disease; and provisions for training health care providers regarding the diagnosis and treatment of critical congenital cyanotic heart disease. The plan shall also include the estimated cost of the program and shall identify potential sources of funding for the program.
