WHEREAS, the Galax High School boys’ basketball team defeated Page County High School before an enthusiastic crowd at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center to win its first Virginia High School League Group A Division 1 championship on March 11, 2011; and

WHEREAS, the Galax High School boys’ basketball team soundly defeated Eastern Montgomery High School 64–46 to take home the Region C championship before advancing to the state championship games; and

WHEREAS, in the state quarterfinals, the Maroon Tide defeated Region D Runner-up Twin Springs High School and then came back from a seven-point deficit in the last 17 seconds of regulation play to send the state semifinal game against Luray High School into overtime; and

WHEREAS, the Galax High School boys’ basketball team triumphed over Luray High School to face Page County High School the next day in the state championship game; and

WHEREAS, the Maroon Tide overcame an early deficit, demonstrating the same tenacious spirit and positive attitude in the state finals’ game that had marked their regular and postseason play; and

WHEREAS, Lawrence Parsons, Justin Hash, and Eddie Hanks led the Galax High School boys’ basketball team’s offensive efforts while the strong defense of the Maroon Tide held the Page County Panthers to 47 points; and

WHEREAS, the Galax High School boys’ basketball team, under the expert guidance of veteran Head Coach Verl Brown, was also honored by the Virginia High School League with a Sportsmanship Award for its exemplary conduct; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Maroon Tide is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Verl Brown and his hardworking staff; and the support of the parents, students, and faculty of Galax High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Galax High School boys’ basketball team on its Virginia High School League Group A Division 1 championship win; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Verl Brown as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the Maroon Tide’s remarkable season.
