SUMMARY AS PASSED HOUSE: (all summaries)
Directing the Joint Commission on Health Care to study access to medical care in rural Southwest Virginia; report. In conducting the study, the Joint Commission on Health Care shall examine (i) the feasibility and effectiveness of a pilot program narrowly tailored to the coalfield region whereby a mechanism would be set up to temporarily allow naturopaths who have graduated from, and met the residency requirements of, a naturopathic medical school accredited by the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges to provide health counseling to the adult citizens of this region in the area of preventative medicine, including smoking cessation, diabetes prevention, and diet and nutrition management, and (ii) ways to encourage more licensed medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy to practice medicine in these traditionally underserved areas, including fully funding the Physician Loan Repayment Program for physicians practicing in these underserved areas. The Commission shall also determine current access to health care and health care professionals in Southwest Virginia, the need for increased access and additional health care professionals in the region, and methods to increase the number of professionals and improve access to health care in the region. This bill incorporates HJR 94 (Kilgore).
