SUMMARY AS PASSED HOUSE:
Elections; vacancies in certain local offices; oaths. Provides that the failure by an elected local governing body member, mayor, or school board member to take the oath of office before attending his first meeting will not create a vacancy in the office so long as he takes the oath within 30 days after the first meeting. Under present law such vacancies must be filled by special elections.
SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:
Elections; filling vacancies in certain local offices. Restores an exemption for towns with a population less than 3,500 from the requirement that any vacancy in a governing body or elected school board shall be filled by special election. Under the exemption, vacancies shall be filled by an appointment of the majority of the remaining members of the body or board.
