2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Connie Amos Thurston, an admired health and physical education teacher and respected resident of Salem, died on January 2, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated health and physical education teacher, Connie Thurston devoted her energies to generations of students in the Salem City Schools and Roanoke County Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, for 31 years, Connie Thurston encouraged students to pursue active, healthy lifestyles and to incorporate fitness into their daily lives; she also served as a volleyball coach at Andrew Lewis Middle School; and
WHEREAS, over the course of three decades, Connie Thurston shared her enthusiasm for being in motion and taught countless young people to adopt healthy life practices; and
WHEREAS, committed to the values of educational excellence, altruism, and world understanding, Connie Thurston was a proud member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women educators; and
WHEREAS, Connie Thurston was an active and contributing member of the West End Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, where she sang in the choir; and
WHEREAS, a lover of the Virginia wilderness, Connie Thurston spent many weekends and vacations camping and traveling; and
WHEREAS, Connie Thurston will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by David, her husband of 44 years; children, Daryl and Jessica, and her many other family members; and the numerous students whose lives she helped shape; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Connie Amos Thurston, an admired educator and respected citizen; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Connie Amos Thurston as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for her memory.
