Celebrating the life of Donald Pomerening.

WHEREAS, Donald Pomerening, a World War II veteran, noted forester, and community supporter from Mount Vernon, died on February 21, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Wisconsin, Donald Pomerening grew up on a farm and, after completing his secondary education, enrolled at the University of Wisconsin; and

WHEREAS, Donald Pomerening interrupted his studies to serve his country in the United States Army, becoming one of the thousands who landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day + 5; and

WHEREAS, a respected soldier, Donald Pomerening earned five battle stars and was stationed in France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Czechoslovakia; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Donald Pomerening returned to the United States, receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and marrying his sweetheart, Audry, with whom he would share 62 years of marriage; he later returned to school and earned a master’s degree from Duke University; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable forester, Donald Pomerening worked for the Virginia Department of Forestry in Staunton before embarking on a career with the United States Forest Service, which took him to South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, New Mexico, and Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Donald Pomerening completed his distinguished career as a forester with an appointment to the Foreign Agriculture Organization in Iran, after which he retired in 1978; and

WHEREAS, an avid outdoorsman, Donald Pomerening traveled with his family to 49 states and seven continents over the years, enjoying many camping adventures and the sights of new lands; and

WHEREAS, after retirement, Donald Pomerening devoted himself to serving in the community as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, the Crop Walk, United Community Ministries, New Hope Housing, and the Fairfax County Human Rights Commission and as a member of Wesley United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity and compassion, Donald Pomerening leaves behind a legacy of service to his country, community, and church, as well as treasured memories for his wife, Audry; surviving son, Dan, and his family, including one granddaughter Dana; and his numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of a brave veteran, forestry expert, and community supporter, Donald Pomerening; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Donald Pomerening as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
