Commending the UCI World Road Cycling Championship on the occasion of the 2015 Championship to be held in Richmond, Virginia.

WHEREAS, The Union Cycliste Intemationale’s (UCI), World Road Cycling Championships is one of cycling’s premiere events and held each year in an international destination selected by the UCI through a bid process; and

WHEREAS, the UCI World Road Cycling Championships is a nine-day event, featuring 12 World Championship Races for Elite Men and Women, Under 23 Men and Women, and Junior Men and Women; and

WHEREAS, athletes compete in three different disciplines including the traditional Road Race, the Individual Time Trial and the recently introduced Team Time Trial, the World Champions are crowned in each discipline; and

WHEREAS, the UCI World Road Cycling Championships have a major economic and global visibility impact on the cities that host them; and

WHEREAS, based on data from recent World Championships the cities who host the Championship have had over 300,000 on site spectators, 1,000 participating cyclists from 70 different countries, 6,000 accredited officials, 1,000 journalists, 500 medial outlets from 35 countries, 400 hours of worldwide television, 300 million television viewers; and

WHEREAS, the UCI World Road Cycling Championship has not been hosted inside of the United States since the 1986 Championship which was held in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby recognize and encourage the World Road Cycling Championship on the occasion of its 2015 Championship to be held in Richmond, Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the World Road Cycling Championship as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of the organization’s many accomplishments and its outstanding service to the people of the Commonwealth.
