Celebrating the life of Mary Alice Burch.

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Burch, an admired member of the New Market Town Council who served her community with great enthusiasm, died on January 30, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mary Alice Burch enjoyed a successful career with Bell (AT&T) Laboratories that spanned more than three decades; and

WHEREAS, after retiring, Mary Alice Burch went into real estate sales in Nevada and New Jersey before moving to New Market in 1993; and

WHEREAS, known and admired for her energy and enthusiasm, Mary Alice Burch served as a member of the New Market Town Council from 2004 to 2008 and was elected to another term in 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Burch worked diligently to meet the needs of local residents through efficient and effective local government; she was also a strong advocate for new gateway signs, a limitation on truck traffic through the town, and a curb and gutter system on an often-flooded street; and

WHEREAS, desirous for visitors to experience the many attractions of New Market, Mary Alice Burch also contributed to the success of the Heritage Days Festival and New Market’s part of the Route 11 Yard Crawl; and

WHEREAS, an experienced business leader, Mary Alice Burch was the president of the New Market Area Chamber of Commerce and was twice named its resident of the year; she dedicated her time and energy to helping local industry grow and thrive and attracting new businesses to the area; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Burch was a dedicated member of the New Market Volunteer Fire Company, serving as treasurer from 2001 to 2002, and was also as an active member in the local Republican Party; and

WHEREAS, an ardent supporter of the Town of New Market, Mary Alice Burch greatly contributed to the betterment of her community and served as an exemplary role model for others; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Burch will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by family members Deborah and Thomas Marten, Kim Kemp, and Jamie and Amy Kemp and by the residents of the Town of New Market; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved resident and member of the New Market Town Council, Mary Alice Burch; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mary Alice Burch as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
