2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Mary Elizabeth Jones, a retired public servant who influenced the growth and development of Sussex County, died on February 8, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a native of Waverly, Mary Jones graduated from the Sussex County Public Schools and received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Union University; and
WHEREAS, a gracious woman with a cheerful and professional demeanor, Mary Jones desired to be of service to her fellow residents and community and went to work for Sussex County; and
WHEREAS, an able administrator and exemplary leader, Mary Jones rapidly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming county administrator, a position she held until her retirement in 2010; and
WHEREAS, as county administrator, Mary Jones oversaw the daily operations of Sussex County while providing recommendations and priorities to the Board of Supervisors to meet the needs of local citizens; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jones enthusiastically supported county staff and listened to the concerns of residents while working diligently to ensure the efficient and effective administration of local government; and
WHEREAS, a woman of faith, Mary Jones was a lifetime member of Piney Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Waverly, where she enjoyed fellowship, worship, and service that greatly enriched her life; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jones generously gave her time and energy to making positive and compassionate contributions to her family, church, and community; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jones will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her three brothers, Waverly, Bernard, and Cecil, and their families; her other family members and many friends; and the residents of Sussex County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant, Mary Elizabeth Jones; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mary Elizabeth Jones as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
