SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 472
Celebrating the life of Louis P. Chisholm, Jr.

WHEREAS, Louis P. Chisholm, Jr., a well-known figure in the agricultural community and local civic leader from Louisa County, died on May 23, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Louis Chisholm began his education at Fredericks Hall in Mineral and completed his secondary education at Louisa High School, before entering Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1941; and

WHEREAS, the advent of World War II caused Louis Chisholm to interrupt his studies as he served as part of the Occupational Forces in Japan for 18 months; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Louis Chisholm returned to Virginia Tech to complete his bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry, earning the prestigious Block and Bridle scholarship and becoming a member of the Alpha Zeta agricultural honorary fraternity; and

WHEREAS, Louis Chisholm decided to return to the family farm in Louisa County after graduation, where he gained practical experience and applied the knowledge gained from his formal studies; and

WHEREAS, in 1957, Louis Chisholm began an exemplary career with the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation as a field representative for 25 eastern counties; he eventually served as manager of the Virginia Farm Bureau Service Corporation, director of the products division, and state secretary before returning to his family farm after his retirement in 1987; and

WHEREAS, Louis Chisholm played a key role in local civic affairs, serving as a dedicated member and longtime chair of the Louisa County School Board and as a member of the Board of Supervisors representing the Cuckoo District during much of the negotiation with Virginia Power when the North Anna Power Station and Lake Anna were created; and

WHEREAS, Louis Chisholm also served on the board of directors of Bank of America, as a member of the local soil and water conservation district, as a 40-year member of the local Ruritan Club, and as a life member of the Louisa County Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable leader in the agricultural community and active participant in local civic life, Louis Chisholm garnered numerous awards and accolades for his distinguished service from a variety of organizations, including the Virginia Farm Bureau, Virginia Tech, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension; and

WHEREAS, Louis Chisholm was also honored with a Good Neighbor Award from the Lake Anna Civic Association for his outstanding contributions, leadership, and service to the people of Louisa County; and

WHEREAS, a lifetime member of Elk Creek Baptist Church, Louis Chisholm served as a trustee, deacon, treasurer, and Sunday School teacher and moderator of the Goshen Baptist Association; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Louis Chisholm will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 60 years, Claudia; children, Louis and Brenda, and their families, including three grandchildren; and his numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired community leader and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Louis P. Chisholm, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Louis P. Chisholm, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
