2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Vincent Joseph Genson, Jr., of Orange County, who enjoyed a legendary broadcasting career in television and radio, died on April 10, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, Vincent “Vince” Genson graduated from Calvert Hall College High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force for four years; after his service, he earned a bachelor’s degree from The American University; and
WHEREAS, Vince Genson began his extraordinary broadcasting career in television with the Evening Star Broadcasting Co., which owned WMAL AM-FM-TV; he soon became producer and director for WMAL-TV before moving to the AM outlet as assistant radio program manager; and
WHEREAS, for 15 years, Vince Genson served as the manager for the Washington Redskins Football Network, ensuring that countless sports fans could follow the progress of their beloved Redskins; and
WHEREAS, a visionary leader dedicated to providing quality programming for his audiences, Vince Genson returned to WMAL-AM in 1970 as program manager and two years later became general manager; he was later elected to serve on the ABC Affiliate Advisory Board; and
WHEREAS, in 1979, Vince Genson came to Spotsylvania County as general manager of WVFA and a decade later was named vice president of operations for Capital Radio Holdings, which had 10 radio stations in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Wisconsin, and Ohio; and
WHEREAS, after decades of experience, Vince Genson fulfilled his entrepreneurial ambitions by cofounding the American View, Inc., radio syndication company, becoming its vice president; and
WHEREAS, respected by his colleagues and revered by many young broadcasters whose careers he helped, Vince Genson was honored to receive the 1996 Distinguished Broadcasters Award and to be inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of the Washington Area; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life, Vince Genson also dedicated his time and energy to serving his local community as a member of the United Way, Rappahannock YMCA, and St. Mary Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS, a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, Vince Genson was awarded a Fourth Degree lifetime membership in the Knights of Columbus in March of 2010; and
WHEREAS, known for his sense of humor, Vince Genson brought great happiness to his wife, Kathy, and son, Victor, and his family, including three grandchildren; he also made many friends who will fondly remember him while the broadcast community will recollect his numerous contributions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a legendary broadcaster and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Vincent Joseph Genson, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Vincent Joseph Genson, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
