Commending The College of William and Mary School of Education on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 2011, the School of Education at The College of William and Mary celebrates its 50th anniversary of preparing teachers and educators to serve the public schools in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, King William III and Queen Mary II granted the charter to establish The College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1693; and

WHEREAS, the 1888 Virginia General Assembly passed an Act to Establish a Normal School at William and Mary College and appropriated $10,000 for males to receive teacher training; and

WHEREAS, in 1961, the Board of Visitors authorized the establishment of a School of Education offering three baccalaureate degree concentrations and two master’s degrees and including the Doctor of Education degree in 1966; and

WHEREAS, in 1996, under the leadership of Dean Virginia McLaughlin, the School of Education was restructured to include three broad program areas: Curriculum & Instruction; Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership; and School Psychology and Counselor Education; and

WHEREAS, the School of Education engages in scholarship and research addressing critical problems in education in order to generate and disseminate ideas that inform and advance educational discourse, policy, and practice; and

WHEREAS, through a variety of research activities, the School of Education provides model programs in direct service to children, adolescents, and their families, as well as technical assistance and professional development opportunities for educators in PK-12, higher education, and agency settings; and

WHEREAS, the faculty of the School of Education has garnered more than $64 million in research grants over the past 10 years, with $19 million during the previous three years; and

WHEREAS, the School of Education awards nearly a third of all master’s degrees and more than half of the doctoral degrees conferred each year at The College of William and Mary; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, the Governor and the General Assembly approved construction of a state-of-the-art facility for the School of Education, and this new building was formally dedicated on September 30, 2010; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate The College of William and Mary School of Education on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the The College of William and Mary School of Education as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the school for its commitment to preparing educators for the Commonwealth and best wishes for continued success in the future.
