2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Sean Brown, a 14-year-old resident of Spotsylvania County, became the All-American Soap Box Derby 2010 Rally Super Stock Division World Champion on July 24, 2010; and
WHEREAS, the All-American Soap Box Derby provides youth from around the world with the opportunity to learn about science, math, and engineering while building and racing their own cars for the chance to win racing titles, scholarships, and other prizes; and
WHEREAS, an experienced racer with a great attitude, Sean Brown has been an avid competitor for several years and won the sportsmanship award at the local Culpeper Derby twice; and
WHEREAS, in 2010, Sean Brown advanced to the World Championships held at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, after earning points by racing in licensed Rally races throughout the United States and Canada; and
WHEREAS, an enthusiastic and hardworking young man, Sean Brown was one of seven racers from the Culpeper area and one of 556 racers from across the world who competed in the 73rd annual race; and
WHEREAS, Sean Brown raced in the super stock car formerly used by his sister, Carol Anne, who also won the sportsmanship award twice at the Culpeper Derby before taking her own life in 2009 after battling depression and bipolar disorder; and
WHEREAS, racing in Carol Anne’s memory and with her picture in the car, Sean Brown focused on running a good race and defeated his other talented competitors to finish first in all four heats to become the world champion in the Rally Super Stock Division; and
WHEREAS, Sean Brown received strong support from his parents, Todd and Michelle; sister, Erin; and the Culpeper contingent, who all enthusiastically cheered him on to victory in 90-degree heat; and
WHEREAS, Sean Brown’s dedication, hard work, and driving skill earned him the admiration and respect of his competitors and led to his resounding success at the 73rd Annual All-American Soap Box Derby; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Sean Brown on becoming the All-American Soap Box Derby 2010 Rally Super Stock Division World Champion; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sean Brown as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for his hard work and commitment.
