2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Terra Centre Elementary School in Burke celebrated 30 years of providing quality education to the students of Fairfax County on October 22, 2010; and
WHEREAS, deriving its name from the Latin translation of “center of the earth,” Terra Centre Elementary School was built in 1980 using design principles engineered to reduce energy consumption and utilizing the natural heat of the earth; and
WHEREAS, Terra Centre Elementary School stands by the principle of educating students who are firmly centered in excellence and grounded in the American dream; and
WHEREAS, serving preschool through sixth grade classes, Terra Centre Elementary School provides distinctive programs designed to meet the learning needs of each of its more than 500 students; and
WHEREAS, the 75 teachers and administrators at Terra Centre Elementary School nurture a sense of pride and self-advocacy in students to prepare them for a lifetime of achievement; and
WHEREAS, Terra Centre Elementary School promotes a collaborative teaching and learning environment that prepares students for future learning opportunities and enhances their growth as individuals; and
WHEREAS, students at Terra Centre Elementary School pursue a rigorous academic curriculum tailored to address their various learning styles including Socratic Seminars, Challenge 24 competitions, Hands on Equations, Compacted Math, and the Philosopher’s Club; and
WHEREAS, Terra Centre Elementary School embraces a multifaceted approach to instruction in order to achieve academic success for each student with multiage classrooms and flexible grouping for math study; and
WHEREAS, each month, students at Terra Centre Elementary School participate in character education lessons to develop their moral compass and to learn ethical approaches to conflict resolution; and
WHEREAS, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Terra Centre Elementary School enjoyed a variety of performances by students; and
WHEREAS, Terra Centre Elementary School owes its success to the dedicated professionals who work at the school, the many volunteer parents and supportive members of the Parent Teacher Association, and the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Terra Centre Elementary School on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Principal Michele Sims as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on the many achievements of Terra Centre Elementary School and best wishes for the school’s future endeavors.
