SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 444
Celebrating the life of Private First Class Benjamin Jaewon Park.

WHEREAS, United States Army Private First Class Benjamin Jaewon Park of Fairfax Station was killed in the line of duty while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the Zhari District, Kandahar, Afghanistan, on June 18, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a patriotic young man who desired to serve his country, Benjamin Park decided to join the United States Army in 2009; and

WHEREAS, after undergoing rigorous training, Private Park arrived at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in 2010, where he was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); and

WHEREAS, an outstanding soldier, Private Park was stationed in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and was on dismounted patrol when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device; and

WHEREAS, Private Park was just three days shy of his 26th birthday when he tragically lost his life in service to his nation and the people of Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, respected by his colleagues and superiors, Private Park received many awards and accolades for his exemplary service, including the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert; and

WHEREAS, a dutiful son who brought great joy to his family, Private Park will be greatly missed by his parents, In Sook Park and Do Hyun Park; sister, Irene; and his other family members, friends, and fellow soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Private Park’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Private First Class Benjamin Jaewon Park; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Private First Class Benjamin Jaewon Park as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
