2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 2010, Fairfax High School celebrated 75 years of providing quality education to the students of Fairfax, Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax High School was the county’s first centralized high school and was originally sited at the old Fairfax County fairground along Lee Highway; and
WHEREAS, after city and school officials broke ground in June of 1934, construction progressed quickly and Fairfax High School held its first classes on February 22, 1935; and
WHEREAS, in the spring of 1936, forty-seven of the school’s 800 students made up the first graduating class of the Fairfax Rebels; and
WHEREAS, over the next 35 years, Fairfax High School constructed eight new facility additions and modified the school curriculum to elevate the standards of learning and offer a variety of courses; and
WHEREAS, construction of the new Fairfax High School commenced in May of 1970 and the $8 million, 48-acre site opened for students to enjoy the new football stadium, expanded athletic complexes, carpeted classrooms, and movable room partitions on January 3, 1972; and
WHEREAS, from November 2004 through November 2007, Fairfax City renovated Fairfax High School to create an additional 85,000 square feet of classroom space and to install the first public school turf field in the county; and
WHEREAS, among its many honors, Fairfax High School was named in the top 131 of the Newsweek Best High Schools in the Nation for the 2008–2009 school year; and
WHEREAS, on September 24, 2010, generations of Fairfax Rebels celebrated the school’s rich history with a homecoming parade, family-friendly tailgate, homecoming football game and halftime show, fireworks, and an alumni gathering at the Fairfax Army Navy Country Club; and
WHEREAS, Lehman Young, representing the graduating class of 1936, and six other volunteers marking each decade of the existence of Fairfax High School took the field for the pre-game coin toss; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax High School has benefitted from the guidance and leadership of its illustrious principals; Gordon Smith, Harold Weiler, Robert Walker, Samuel Coffey, Cyrus Doub, Robert Tabor, Robert Russell, Clarence Drayer, Joan Curcio, Harry Holsinger, Dr. Donald Weinheimer, Lillian Lowery, Linda L. Thompson, Scott Brabrand, and David Goldfarb; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Fairfax High School on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David Goldfarb, principal of Fairfax High School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the high school for providing 75 years of exceptional education to its students and best wishes for the future.
