Commending Inova Fairfax Hospital on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 1956, following several public forums, a group of concerned Fairfax County citizens incorporated the Fairfax Hospital Association for the sole purpose of funding, building, and operating a not-for-profit hospital in Fairfax County to be known as the Fairfax Hospital; and

WHEREAS, in 1958, the citizens of Fairfax County embraced this concept and overwhelmingly approved the issuance of Fairfax County general obligation bonds in the sum of $3.5 million, matching this amount with federal Hill-Burton funds for a total of $6.5 million; and

WHEREAS, on February 6, 1961, Fairfax Hospital was “dedicated by the citizens of Fairfax County to the relief of human suffering and to the protection and preservation of the health of all who enter its doors” while staff assisted in the delivery of two live births; and

WHEREAS, in 1997 the Fairfax Hospital was renamed Inova Fairfax Hospital to reflect its status as the flagship hospital of the not-for-profit Inova Health System; and

WHEREAS, the campus of Inova Fairfax Hospital has expanded to 833 acute care beds and includes the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, the Inova Fairfax Hospital Women’s Center, and the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute; and

WHEREAS, the Inova Fairfax Hospital also serves as the Inova campus of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, in 1983 the Commonwealth of Virginia designated the Inova Fairfax Hospital Regional Trauma Center as the Level 1 Trauma Center for Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, for the past 50 years, generous donors have enthusiastically contributed significant moneys to Inova Fairfax Hospital, which has permitted the growth of new programs and services to serve the community; and

WHEREAS, the success of Inova Fairfax Hospital would not be possible without the loyal, faithful, and devoted personnel of the auxiliary of Inova Fairfax Hospital; members of the administration, ancillary staff, and nursing staff; and devoted physicians; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital has again been awarded the prestigious Magnet Recognition in Nursing Excellence, earned by only five percent of the nation’s health care organizations; and

WHEREAS, Inova Fairfax Hospital has been consistently named among the 50 Best Hospitals in the United States both by U.S. News & World Report and by Health Grades, including the latest listing in 2010; and

WHEREAS, for the past half-century, Inova Fairfax Hospital has continued to grow, providing state-of-the-art medical treatment and superior patient care in accordance with the words inscribed on its dedication plaque, “to the relief of human suffering and to the protection and preservation of the health of all who enter its doors”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Inova Fairfax Hospital on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Inova Fairfax Hospital as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and gratitude for the Hospital’s commitment to quality patient care and medical excellence.
