Commending the Veterans Independence Program.

WHEREAS, Bay Aging is the agency on aging that pioneered the Virginia’s Veterans Independence Program in 2009 in response to the pressing need for supportive services for veterans of all ages who are at risk of nursing home placement throughout Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Veterans Independence Program partners with the Virginia Department for the Aging, McGuire VA Medical Center, Wounded Warriors, Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services Board, Disabled American Veterans, departments of social services, and others to receive referrals from veterans who need services; and

WHEREAS, the Veterans Independence Program, developed by Bay Aging, is a unique model of service delivery for veterans directing their own care in rural Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Veterans Independence Program offers numerous support solutions for veterans and their caregivers such as care management, adult day care, assistive devices, caregiver support, CareMatch, environmental support, housing, home modification, in-home personal care, meal delivery, public transportation, and New Freedom Mobility Management for people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, the success of the Veterans Independence Program influenced the Veterans Administration licensing for Bay Aging adult day care centers; and

WHEREAS, the success of the Veterans Independence Program also influenced the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development in granting preferred housing status for veterans in Bay Aging senior apartments with complete access to affordable supportive services; and

WHEREAS, the Veterans Independence Program provides an invaluable service for veterans and their caregivers in Virginia and is a worthy recipient of commendation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Veterans Independence Program for its ongoing efforts to further develop veteran facilities and services; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bay Aging as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for the organization’s work and commitment to veterans and their families in the Commonwealth.
