WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, thousands of lives were lost and many injured in the coordinated terrorist attacks on the United States; and

WHEREAS, family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers who all contributed to the rich fabric of life in the Commonwealth and nation perished, leaving an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved them; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth suffered grievous losses as beloved Virginians worked at the World Trade Center and Pentagon and were on board the ill-fated planes; and

WHEREAS, the Virginians who lost their lives came from all walks of life and each made valuable contributions in their individual fields of endeavor; and

WHEREAS, September 11, 2001, was a day marked by extraordinary loss and unbelievable heroism and compassion; and

WHEREAS, on that day, ordinary people, faced with unprecedented events, responded with courage, compassion, and resolve to perform extraordinary deeds in an effort to save and comfort those who were suffering; and

WHEREAS, first responders mobilized within minutes to respond to the sites of the attacks, braving the fire and smoke in an effort to evacuate the buildings and locate survivors, with hundreds of selfless souls losing their own lives as the World Trade Center towers collapsed; and

WHEREAS, medical professionals rushed to the chaotic scenes and local hospitals, where they worked for days on end to treat the wounded; and

WHEREAS, countless individuals from around the nation and world, who could not be of help at the sites but who desired to be of service, responded in droves to blood banks and gathered in local houses of worship to pray for the victims and their families; and

WHEREAS, in one of our nation’s darkest days, the heroic and compassionate actions of everyday people shone as a beacon of hope to a stunned and saddened Commonwealth and nation; and

WHEREAS, September 11, 2011, will mark the tenth anniversary of that horrible day and is an appropriate time for reflection and remembrance; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby solemnly remember the Virginians lost and injured in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and express its heartfelt condolences to their families; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly encourage all Virginians to remember, on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the loss of their fellow citizens, the sorrow of the families who lost loved ones, and those who suffered injuries on that day.
