2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, on March 13, 2010, the Surry County High School girls’ basketball team, the Lady Cougars, returned from the Siegel Center in Richmond having earned the Group A, Division I, state championship title; and
WHEREAS, this was the first state title earned by a Surry County High School girls’ basketball team; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Cougars had an overall record of 21–4 and a district record of 9–1; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Cougars were the Tri-Rivers District champions, the Tri-Rivers District Tournament champions, and the Region A, Division I, Tournament champions; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Cougars were undefeated at the Surry County High School Joseph A. Ellis Gymnasium during the 2009–2010 season; and
WHEREAS, Head Coach Mazé Toomer was named District, Region, and State Division I Coach of the Year by his peers; and
WHEREAS, players Britney Johnson and RaeChaun Edwards were selected to the All-District First Team and Whitney Johnson was selected to the All-District Second Team; and
WHEREAS, the average cumulative grade point average for the Lady Cougars was 91 percent or 3.3 on a 4.0-point scale; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Cougars’ superb 2009–2010 season was a team effort, and the hard work, perseverance, and dedication of the players and the coaching staff, along with the support of the Surry County Board of Supervisors, the Surry County School Board, the Surry community, and Surry County High School students, faculty, staff, and administration paid off in this championship season; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby salute the Lady Cougars of Surry County High School on their superlative 2009–2010 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mazé Toomer as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for Surry County High School’s state championship team.
