WHEREAS, The George Washington University was founded through the hard work and vision of three of Virginia’s great leaders—George Washington, James Madison, and James Monroe; and

WHEREAS, The George Washington University has been educating Virginians since its founding in 1821 and has been offering educational programs in Virginia for over 50 years; and

WHEREAS, The George Washington University first established a presence in the Commonwealth in Hampton in 1958 and has expanded to campuses in Arlington and Loudoun Counties and the City of Alexandria; and

WHEREAS, with more than 2,100 students taking classes in Virginia, The George Washington University is among the largest private providers of graduate education in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, with more than 42,000 alumni living in Virginia, The George Washington University is a major contributor to Virginia’s workforce and economic competitiveness; and

WHEREAS, The George Washington University established its Loudoun campus in Ashburn, Virginia, in 1991 on a 50-acre gift of land donated by emeritus trustee Robert H. Smith; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Science and Technology Campus has grown to include nearly 400 full-time, part-time, and temporary employees in five buildings on more than 100 acres; and

WHEREAS, The George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus serves as a research and development center focusing on cutting-edge research in alternative energy, transportation safety, computer modeling and simulation, and the health sciences; and

WHEREAS, The George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus is educating Virginians with more than 20 undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs to fill critical workforce needs; and

WHEREAS, in May 2010, The George Washington University’s Board of Trustees approved a School of Nursing that offers an accelerated second degree BSN at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus, adding to The George Washington University’s existing nursing program, which includes six master’s degrees, the doctor of nursing practice, and four graduate nursing certificates; and

WHEREAS, The George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus has forged partnerships with other Virginia education institutions including George Mason University, Shenandoah University, Northern Virginia Community College, and Fairfax County and Loudoun County Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, 2011 marks the twentieth anniversary of The George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend The George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus on its twentieth anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the University for its contribution to the economy of the Commonwealth and for educating its citizens to fill jobs of the 21st Century.
