WHEREAS, Marie Ridder is commended for a lifetime of contributions to Virginia’s environment, natural resources, and communities; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder was deputy to the national director of Project Head Start and liaison to Mrs. Lyndon Johnson from 1964 to 1968; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder was editor for Condé Nast and a Washington correspondent for the Ridder and Knight Ridder newspapers, and wrote for a wide variety of publications, including The Washington Post and Boston Globe; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder is an advisory board member of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, and a former chairman of the Virginia State Parks Commission, the Virginia Council on the Environment, and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation; and

WHEREAS, a respected and articulate advocate for the protection of farm land, natural resources, historic resources, and cultural resources, Marie Ridder has been a leader in preserving some of Virginia’s most valued historic land; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder helped spearhead investment that enabled the Commonwealth of Virginia to conduct a study of migratory bird patterns that helped the Commonwealth prioritize land protection; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder worked tirelessly to acquire the first state park on the Eastern Shore at Kiptopeke, and under her leadership, sought protection of hemispherically important migratory bird habitats on the Eastern Shore; and

WHEREAS, a champion of wildlife, Marie Ridder has fought for the protection of some of Virginia’s most endangered species; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder’s commitment to preservation and conservation has led her to serve in numerous organizations in the Commonwealth throughout her career, including the Piedmont Environmental Council, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the Nature Conservancy; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder will long be appreciated for her visionary dedication to ensuring the protection of Virginia’s most sacred places; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Marie Ridder; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Marie Ridder as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for her many outstanding achievements and gratitude for her commitment to the protection and preservation of the environment, natural resources, and communities of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
